super bowl - three cheese pinwheels - apparently three cheeses aren't enough for me

three cheese pinwheels with crescent rolls (super bowl) - 26For the Super Bowl, I thought I'd make a ton of mini appetizers with the huge bundle of Pillsbury Crescent Rolls that I had hoarded in the fridge from months ago. I figured these would be similar to the Thanksgiving appetizers I made, but I definitely didn't want to make another sausage quiche or another bacon pinwheel. I couldn't think of anything interestingly different than quiches or pinwheels, so I figured I'd just switch it up a bit. Why not use my ultimate favorite ingredient as a replacement for the bacon in the pinwheels- cheese!

I got the idea from Pillsbury.com for the three cheese pinwheels. I varied it of course to suit my own needs. I used Pepper Jack cheese, Mozzarella cheese (instead of blue cheese- I know they're not similar, I was just going for something different), and cream cheese (as a binder for all the cheesiness). I also had one can of crescent rounds left, which would be perfect for the slicing of the pinwheels.

I spread out the dough and rolled it as large as I could. Then I spread the already mixed cheese combination evenly on to the dough. I also had an abundant amount of basil so I chopped up a few springs and sprinkled them on top.

I carefully rolled up the dough and set it in the fridge for the following day so I could bake them fresh for the day of the Super Bowl.

I sliced them evenly into 16 perfect little cute rounds.

The little pinwheels baked up and revealed little pockets of gooey cheese.

The little flecks of green are either the chopped basil or the jalapeno from the pepper jack cheese.

As for the taste- they were pretty good... definitely not as good as I would have liked them, but at the same time people were still eating them.

Typical me- I would have liked them a lot more cheesy. For some reason it just wasn't that gooey-stringy-cheesy type of food that I like.

That of course didn't stop me from eating a whole ton of these though. Anything with a bready-substance and melted cheese is damn good in my book.

  2. You rolled the short side up? Didn't that make them quite large. Could you put some cubed ham in there for a quick change? They look delicious

    2. I made something similar years ago...I think I had cream cheese cojack cheese, fresh fried bacon bits, a bit of garlic powder and some sauteed onion and peppers. Cojack always melts nicely.

  5. I'll try this tonight, but I'll switch out the crescent rolls for puff pastry and use a sharp cheddar. Thanks for the recipe, it sounds like it's got a lot of potential!

  7. I am a huge puff pastry fan, but decided to make several batches of these exactly as written for a HUGE birthday party I just threw. The pinwheels were DELISH and got rave reviews with a ton of people asking for the recipe. (I've sent them over to your blog!!)

  9. Can I cut them after I bake them? Afraid they will fall apart

    1. Cutting them after baking doesn't yield the desired result - I've done it twice with ham and cheese. Freezing them first should hold them together. Am trying this recipe out for a potluck, tomorrow.

  10. I baked then on tin foil (nonstick side up) and yet they still stuck. So, I'd suggest using cooking spray if you do it like I did. Extra sharp cheddar was the way to go. Really tasty!

    1. Try parchment paper instead let cool for a minute or two before removing

  11. I bake everything on parchment paper lines cookie sheets - (no non stick spray needed) and they will never stick. Easy clean up too- just throw away when finished. Especially with cookies you don't get the greasy cookie bottoms that you get from spray.

  12. I also use parchment paper for EVERYTHING I bake. So easy and my baking sheets hardly need sny washing. Nothing sticks!

  16. Different cheeses have different textures as well as flavor. I say keep experimenting!

  17. Can these be baked and frozen for later use?

    1. Cut then freeze. Bake when ready you will be better off. They will be fresh. If bake first they will not be as nice!! This way you can bake only as many as you would want at once.

  18. These were just ok. I’d add more cream cheese and Mayo to make them a little gooey. The recipe fails to mention that the cookie sheet should be oiled. Most of mine stuck to the pan. Probably won’t do this recipe again.

    1. Use parchment paper - nothing sticks and you don't need to use oil spray. I always keep parchment paper on hand.

  19. I’m making these tomorrow and I’m going to use Puff Pastry dough instead of the Crescent Rolls. I do think both sound great, however I love the texture and crunch of the pastry dough. Keeping fingers crossed 🤞

  20. Making these today for a potluck. I saw how you don’t think they are cheesy enough, so I added 2 more cheeses - Swiss and Gruyère.

    1. Someone said earlier that they weren’t good after baked. That you should cut them, then freeze and pull out as needed. Just to let you know. I can’t wait to try them. I hope they were good?

  24. I used the Pilsbury recipe for "Ham it up wreath" but for the super bowl I rolled out the dough and made pinwheels instead just because you didn't need a fork to eat them. I make the wreath a lot for a quick dinner, it has cooked chopped broccoli , shredded swiss cheese, mustard, parsley, lemon juice, butter and cubed ham mixed. Then form a wreath, place the mixture on the wide part of the dough, pull the top over and tuck in each end, topped with parmesan cheese. bake delicious!!
